IT'S NOT THE DESTINATION, BUT THE glory OF THE RIDE.

TRAVEL INFO

Afari is here to arrange the trip you have chosen, or to compose and plan any custom-made tour. But there are some things that you have to handle by yourself. For instance: insurance, vaccination, travel documents and visas (if necessary). Below you will find some more information on practical matters regarding preparations for your holiday. We are always happy to provide advice and assistance to facilitate your preparations

BOOKING FLIGHTS

Afari Adventures can arrange flights for you, but you can also do it yourself. If you live in the Netherlands, we recommend booking your flights with our partners Internoord Reizen or SRC-Reizen op maat.

These reliable and professional tour operators have in-house flight experts, who seek out competitive flight prices daily. They have access to special industry offers and often more flexible fares, and also directly negotiate rates with a range of airlines. They have first-hand familiarity of the destinations we go to (some pretty obscure!), so know the best places to seek the airports, airlines, routes and times to suit you.

Let them do the groundwork to find you the most direct option with a reputable airline which offers the best schedules, and let them provide the link between your tour and your flights should any difficulties, schedule changes, re-routing or cancellations arise.

Another important thing is the security and financial protection they offer. In case of cancellation of the trip, due to things such as political unrest, they can reschedule your international and local flights booked through them.

MONEY AND KITTY

Afari works with a ‘kitty’, a central fund managed by the group for any group expenditure (more about kitties below). You pay an amount of money in addition to the trip price. Please note that trip price plus kitty excludes:
• optional activities
• travel insurance
• connecting flights and airport transfers
• personal taxes (including personal border taxes)
• any other transportation costs while not on the trip
• passports and visas, vaccinations and kit
• extra accommodation or upgrades
• contingency route expenses in case of war, flood, etc
• any further spending money

What’s a kitty?
The kitty is a group fund, paid separately from the trip price at the start of your trip, which covers all activities that the whole group does, such as hotel accommodation and campsite fees, meals whilst camping (not in hotels), activities listed as included (e.g. National park admissions, excursions and local guides).

Each passenger pays into a central fund, monitored by the Afari crew. It’s payable in full at the start of your trip, and in instalments at the start of each individual trip on combination trips. The kitty system is very unique to overland travel to provide maximum flexibility and best value on the road. You can see exactly what is being paid for, you get everything at cost price. Buying as a group keeps costs competitive and saves on administrative costs.

Don’t forget! Spending money

How much you spend personally depends on how many extra activities you want to do. All hotel food, drinks, laundry, souvenirs, taxis and restaurants are part of your personal spending. You may also want to include some money for local tips. Good local guides and crew members can make your trip experience exceptional, and (even modest) tips are hugely appreciated. A rough spending guide is included in trip notes.

In most countries you can get the local currency at banks and ATM machines. You may want to bring dollars as well.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

Cover is essential! You must have extensive travel insurance as a condition of booking with us, and without evidence of a valid policy you won’t be allowed to start your trip. If you are not insured, our travel agency partners, Internoord Reizen and SRC–Reizen op Maat, we will assist in getting you the right insurance cover. Furthermore, an cancellation insurance is recommended. You can find more information about this on the website of SRC-Reizen op Maat.

HEALTH AND VACCINATIONS

Recommended vaccinations and other health protection measures vary according to region and recent bulletins issued by health authorities. It’s essential to get the latest advice on the region(s) you’re planning to travel in, and that you check with either your doctor or a travel clinic in good time before you leave. As a tour operator we’re unable to give medical advice, so we refer you instead to either the World Health Organisation or GGD (in Dutch only).
